This is a shortened version of the traditional Egyptian galabia, or robe. This versatile shirt pattern can be sewn up for casual or elegant occasions for men and women. The original garments are ankle length and unadorned. The pattern offers a modern shirt length version and a mid-calf version, both which may be left plain or decorated with contrasting yoke, applique, or soutache braid in typical designs, and/or handmade cording and knotted buttons.

This pattern is a loose-fitting style with side panels and slit pockets. Sleeves are slightly flared and curve under arms to meet side panels. The yoke can be turned to the inside, or to the outside for interesting contrast.

Instructions are included for knotted buttons, decorative cording, soutache applique, and lengthening the shirt to make the galabia.

Suggested fabrics: Crisp or soft fabrics such as cottons, muslin, lightweight denim, broadcloth. For applique pieces, use 100% cotton.
